Description

GERMANY. Carl Wilhelm Ramler Silver Medal, ND (ca. 1780). NGC Unc Details--Cleaned.
Hoffmann-264. By Abramson. Diameter: 44mm. Obverse: Draped bust of Ramler facing left, perimeter legend CARL WILHELM RAMLER. above; signature ABRAMSON . F. beneath bust; Reverse: Lyre with an interwoven laurel branch, perimeter legend ROMANAE FIDICEN LYRAE. Ramler was an author, poet and critic, and translator of classical texts into German. He resigned a professorship later in life to manage the royal theater. Another medal in the series on German scholars and poets by Abramson. This medal provides generous splashes of cerulean on medium argent surfaces with hints of champagne and carmine. The noted cleaning is light and does not detract from the subtle interplay of color on the sparely designed surfaces. Attractive.
Margolis had a few rather overt interests in his collecting of medallic art. One such theme was that of medals pertaining to man's earliest pursuits to conquer the heavens in the form of ballooning. The European exploits of the late 18th century are contained here across many different country categories. Also quite noticeable was his interest in the medallic art of Jewish engravers, such as Jakob Abraham and his son, Abraham Abramson, among numerous others. Across this selection of medals, these themes and topics will become obvious, adding further dimensions to the already intense focus with which Margolis pursued his collecting.
From the Richard Margolis Collection.

Estimate: $200.00 - $300.00
