Description

DENMARK. Andreas Petrus Bernstorff Silver Medal, 1793. NGC MS-61.
Galster-499. By Daniel Jensen Adzer. Diameter: 57mm. Obverse: Bust of Bernstorff facing left, wearing oak-leaf crown, perimeter legend STATS MINISTEREN ANDREAS PETRUS BERNSTORFF above, AF MEDBORGERE below bust; signature D . I . ADZER . F: on truncation of bust; Reverse: large compass rose with needle pointing north; perimeter legend UDEN MISVISNING above, MDCCXCIII below. Andreas Petrus Bernstorff, nephew of Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff, was a Danish diplomat and long-time Minister of Foreign Affairs. He is renowned as a statesman who deftly navigated Danish interests while wedged between the powers of Sweden and Russia. This medal offers richly cabinet-toned argent surfaces warmed with a champagne hue in the lettering and design features. Attractive with great eye appeal.
Margolis had a few rather overt interests in his collecting of medallic art. One such theme was that of medals pertaining to man's earliest pursuits to conquer the heavens in the form of ballooning. The European exploits of the late 18th century are contained here across many different country categories. Also quite noticeable was his interest in the medallic art of Jewish engravers, such as Jakob Abraham and his son, Abraham Abramson, among numerous others. Across this selection of medals, these themes and topics will become obvious, adding further dimensions to the already intense focus with which Margolis pursued his collecting.
From the Richard Margolis Collection.

Estimate: $300.00 - $500.00
