Description

The Very Rare "Open Stars" 1934 Soviet Dollar
Illustrated in the Most Recent Edition of L&M
(t) CHINA. Szechuan-Shensi Soviet. Dollar, 1934 (in characters). T'ungchiang Mint. PCGS EF-40.
L&M-890 (this coin illustrated); K-808b; KM-Y-513.4; WS-1340. Variety with small, open (pentagram/crisscross) stars. Surpassed in the PCGS census by just a single example, this incredibly impressive and EXCEPTIONALLY RARE "hammer & sickle" Dollar presents a fairly clear and crisp strike throughout, with just a touch of weakness evident near the "one" character in the date. Featuring the open or "pentagram" style stars, of which this is the smaller-sized version, this specimen displays a type that is not often encountered in the market, and represents the first such instance of the open stars version that we have offered, be they large or small. Some burnished russet toning is observed in the fields and around the devices, lending even more character to this important specimen.
From the KL Collection.

(t) On September 1, 2019, the United States enacted new tariffs on collector's items of Chinese origin, including bullion and numismatic coins and banknotes.
