IRAQ. Government of Iraq. 1/4 Dinar, 1931 (ND 1941). P-13. PMG About Uncirculated 53.
Prefix E/1. By far the nicest example of this issue that we have handled, this note boasts exceptional eye-appeal with strong original paper that is free of repairs, writing, or other issues. It features a single centerfold, some corner folds, and handling commensurate with the grade, but overall a fantastic example of this scarce and popular type. This is an important opportunity for collectors, as it is also the nicest example to appear at public auction in recent memory. Collectors of Middle Eastern banknotes are certainly familiar with the story of these issues, which resemble the types printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. for Iraq in the early 1940s. During World War II, when supply routes were heavily impacted and unreliable, the Iraqi government ordered a limited number of low denomination notes from Nasik Security Printing Press in India. These notes maintained the same basic design as the previous Bradbury printings, featuring a portrait of a young King Faisal II, but they possess a very distinctive look as they were designed and printed by this printer in India. The notes were intended to ensure a sufficient supply of currency in circulation and were issued alongside the regular notes. However, the quantity produced was quite small, making these notes a significant opportunity for the Iraqi specialist. They represent a classic rarity in fantastic condition for the type, offering an important opportunity to acquire this iconic type in high grade.
