ETHIOPIA. Bank of Abyssinia. 100 Thalers, ND (1915-29). P-4s. Specimen. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
A fantastic example of this rare Bank of Abyssinia issue with a majestic elephant at right. Seen here as a specimen, this particular example is tied for finest in the PMG population report with just one other example; a mere four notes in total are graded. The Bank of Abyssinia was a private bank with Egyptian roots that was responsible for the issuance of the country's first bank notes, starting in 1915. Largely unpopular with the local population and often traded at a discount, the quantity issued was small for any of the denominations and issued notes from the Bank of Abyssinia are extremely rare today. Specimens and color trials (such as the set in our sale today) are the only way many collectors can hope to acquire this series, but demand for them is high and offerings are very infrequent. Important opportunity for the African specialist not to be missed.
