Description

EAST AFRICA. Government of the East Africa Protectorate. 20 Rupees, 1.7.1912. P-3s. Specimen. PMG About Uncirculated 53.
The next denomination of this iconic series of the East Africa protectorate. This is the only example of this specimen presently graded by PMG according to their population report, and we don't recall seeing many others in the marketplace (a few color trial specimens have been seen as well). Clearly saved for archival purposes, this example features a small stamp showing a 1913 date, but is otherwise entirely problem-free and with fantastic eye-appeal. It has a bright colored underprint and features a sharp impression of all the major design elements. A single "CANCELLED" perforation is seen. This series of notes from the East Africa Protectorate really don't need much of an introduction. Their large format and rarity have turned them into classic rarities in the realm of world paper money. Yet, when compared to the available supply of these notes, they remain fairly undervalued, especially when compared to stamps of the same region that often have many more examples known yet are heralded as world class rarities. While your cataloger enjoys philately from time to time it shows that there are still bargains to be had in world paper money. We don't expect the present offering to be a bargain but we would not be surprised if over the years this turns out to be a profitable buy, as demand for rarities such as this continues to increase year over year.
From the Mombasa Collection.
