DANZIG. Bank von Danzig. 100 Gulden, 10.2.1924. P-55. CM#44. PMG Very Fine 20.
Fully issued and uncancelled example of what is among the rarest of the Bank von Danzig series. Danzig (today more commonly known as Gdansk, a city in Poland) was a city-state under the protection and oversight of the League of Nations. The political history of Gdansk is beyond the scope of this catalog, but is an interesting read of German and Polish history along with wartime politics. Its first bank notes were issued during a coin shortage in 1914, and various issuers would continue to issue notes until the late 1930s, when Nazi Germany took over control of the city. A popular series with both German and Polish collectors, completion is possible, although there are select key rarities within the series, including the present example. The Bank von Danzig was established in 1924 and would use the Gulden as its currency, which was introduced shortly after hyperinflation had rendered the Reichsmark essentially worthless. A fantastic opportunity for the specialist collector to acquire an extremely rare issued note from this heavily collected locale.
