ITALY. Judgement of Paris Cast Bronze Medal, ND (original ca. Late 15th to early 16th century). GOOD VERY FINE.
cf. Molinier 147. Generally attributed to either Giovanni di Fondulini Fonduli or Giovanni Francesco Furnio. Diameter: 51mm. Obverse: Paris, left, seated on a rock and under a tree branch, offering a golden apple to Venus; Athena and Juno behind and a small Cupid flying above; Reverse: Plain. A concave example; pierced at top as typical for the issue. The lettering "I O F F" in the exergue is extremely faint and the detail in the figures is somewhat lacking; likely a late cast. Each of the goddesses desires the golden apple and each offers Paris a reward to entice him in his decision. Paris chooses love as offered by Venus; the beautiful Helen flees with him and thus triggers the Trojan War. An attractive and interesting example of the renaissance medal.Due to the size and nature of this lot, additional shipping charges apply. Please call 800-458-4646 for more information.
