1883 Maris Family Bicentennial Medal. Julian CM-27. Bronze. MS-64 (PCGS).
38 mm. Though the dies were made at the U.S. Mint, and a few of these were struck there (two gold and one aluminum, according to Mint records), the larger number of bronze specimens were apparently struck by another Philadelphia medal maker. A small group of these came from the Maris family to Bruce Kesse in 1988, including this one. The family holding was passed down from Edward Maris to his son, Judge Albert Maris, to Robert Wood Maris. Most of the pieces from this small hoard have exceptionally nice toning and surfaces, like this one.
