Description

FRANCE. Father Lacordaire School Prize Bronze Medal, ND (ca. 1900). UNCIRCULATED.
Weight: 19.6 gms; diameter: 35mm. By Daniel Jean Baptiste Dupuis. Obverse: Brother Lacordaire facing right, FR[ERE] HENRI DOMINIQUE LACORDAIRE around; Reverse: Wreath strewn with a banderole bearing the name of the school and motto. Below two armorials, one a cross and quill pen, the other a dog with ball, above a quill and branch surmounted by a start-presumably arms related to the school and the Paris Dominicans, PRIX. ECOLE ALBERT LEGRAND. ARCUEIL ALLONS MES AMIS POUR LE BON DIEU without presentation inscription. The Dominican friar Lacordaire was widely considered one of the finest preachers of the 19th century, and played an instrumental role in the re-establishment of his order after the violence of the Paris Commune of 1871. The reverse motto ("Come, my friends, for God") echo the final words of the Dominican Prior, Frère Louis-Raphaël Captier, before he and his fellow Dominicans in the Paris suburb of Arcueil were executed during the Paris Commune on 25 May 1871. The previous day, the Albert-le-Grand School was ransacked and looted over the objections of the Prior, and the motto was later adopted as that of the school itself. Though undated, the medal is recorded in Spink & Sons, Monthly Numismatic Calendar 15:170 (January 1907): 9616 (#35323).
