FRANCE. Jean Casimir-Perier Bronze Medal, 1894. Paris Mint. UNCIRCULATED.
Weight: 147 gms; diameter: 68mm. By JC Chaplain. Obverse: portrait bust of mustached Jean Casimir-Perier facing left, wearing the Légion d'Honneur, CASIMIR-PERIER PRESIDENT DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE around; Reverse: woman representing the National Assembly of France in classical dress and veil, facing right and stepping up to a tribune to place a ballot paper in an urn. The latter rests atop a pedestal with lion-head pilasters along the edge and central image of the insignia of the French Republic: fasces behind a double tablet of law, oak and olive branches behind and initials "R[epublique] F[rançaise]" on either side, ELU PAR L'ASSEMBLEE NATIONALE LE 27 JUIN 1894 around. Rim: Stamped "Bronze" with cornucopia hallmark of Paris Mint. This medal commemorates the election of the businessman Jean Casimir-Périer as President of France immediately after the assassination of President Carnot (whose medal also is represented in the Parks Collection in two examples, one oversize). It was designed in retrospect, and places considerable gravity on the election, despite the artist's awareness that Casimir-Périer held the shortest presidency in French history, lasting only six months. Fernand Mazerolle dates this medal 1894 but notes that it was finished in 1896. Chaplain produced a cast medal of the same subject in 1894.
