Diameter: 195mm. By JC Chaplain. Obverse: Bust of Meissonier facing left, ERNEST MEISSONIER ME[EM]BRE DE L'INSTITUT. AETATIS SVAE LXXV around; Reverse: Hollow, marked "069 DM" in ink. Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-91) was one of Champlain's most detailed and sculptural medals , particularly the artist's expressive hair and famously long-flowing beard. He was an extremely successful conservative French classicist painter and sculptor most famous for his finely det ailed representations of Napoleon and allied military themes. In 1861 elected a member of the Académie des beaux-arts of l'Institute de France (cited on obverse).
