Weight: 186.3 gms; diameter: 73mm. By JC Chaplain. Obverse: Central figure of the City of Paris as woman in classical robes covered by a male rifleman's coat, wearing mural crown and the cross of the Légion d'Honneur over her left breast, a rifle, butt on ground and leaning to the right under her clasped arms fixed with bayonet. She stands in front of a cannon, a basket of ammunition behind at left. A signal mast with flags appears in the left background, being approached by a flying carrier pigeon; an air balloon is visible in the distance on the right. In the distant background appear the domes of the Pantheon, the Invalides and Notre Dame; Reverse: Monumental stele upon a dais commemorating the major sorties, with dates, fought by Parisian forces against the surrounding Prussian army, all ultimately repulsed, during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. The upper portion of the memorial with Beaux-Art female head of Paris topped by mural crown, ancient Greek battle shield upheld with strap and palm leaf below, and sapling tree behind at right, CHAMPIGNY DEUX DÉCEMBRE. CHATILLON 19 SEPTEMBRE. L'HAŸ 30 SEPTEMBRE. LE BOURGET 28-29 OCTOBRE. BUZENVAL 19 JANVIER. SIEGE DE PARIS 1870-1871 left and right. The obverse of this medal was incorporated into a molded ceiling design in the Bibliothèque National de France, Musée des Médailles et Antiques.
