MDCCCLXXXII to right and below. Rim: Stampled "Bronze" with Paris Mint cornucopia hallmark. Leon Gambetta (1838-82) was an Italo-French politician made famous as an early herald of the Third Republic and for his passionate, if partly futile, attempt to raise the siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. He rose to become President of the Chamber of Deputies (1879-81), and then President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs for a brief two months prior to his premature death in a firearm accident in 1882.
