FRANCE. Georges Lafenistre Uniface Bronze Medal, 1869. UNCIRCULATED.
Diameter: 100mm. By JC Chaplain. Obverse: Bust left, GEORGES LAFENISTRE around. Reverse: Blank. This exceptionally rare and possibly unique uniface work is not listed in any medallic catalog, however it is almost certainly by Chaplain. The subject is French art historian and Louvre curator George Lafenestre (different spelling), 1837-1919. "From 1864 to 1868, the artist continued his studies in Italy…He exhibited at the Salons of 1863, 1864, 1866, and 1869 several busts, Portrait-medallions of Schnetz, Director of the French Academy at Rome (1866), R. Robert-Fleury, and Mme. Carolus-Duran, and a few medals, Head of Ceres, 1867, Victorious France (a study)…and others, and the medal of the Universal Exhibition of 1867" (Forrer, Biographical Dictionary, 1902, p. 399)
