Description

1788 Machin's Mills Halfpenny / Connecticut Copper Mule. Vlack 13-88CT, Miller 101-D W-8080. Rarity-5. VF-25 (PCGS).
140.1 grains. Glossy chocolate brown throughout though there is light porosity and scattered obverse pits. While the latter are a bit distracting, they are probably at least partially natural flaws. A natural edge clip right of George's portrait and a few minor rim nicks are noted. The obverse is well centered, the portrait is well outlined, and the obverse legend varies from sharp to largely missing, the last due to bulging at the rims from the later die state. The reverse does not have the pits and flaws of the obverse, but it is a bit off center to the left with almost none of the leftmost legend visible, while LIB is sharp and enveloped by a thick dentiled rim. Only the tops of the date digits are showing; the central motif is nicely defined. A fine old provenance is given on the original tag from Hillyer Ryder, who bought it in the 1908 Low sale.
PCGS# 687740.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier from Lyman Low's sale of the Henry Phelps Collection, March 1908, lot 35; Hillyer C. Ryder; F.C.C. Boyd; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part IX, May 2005, lot 510; Chris Stephens, January 2004.
