1788 Connecticut Copper. Miller 10-C, W-4505. Rarity-5. Mailed Bust Left. EF Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS).
104.5 grains. Light brown with subtle rose and blue accents left from an old cleaning. A little porous, with some scattered corrosion pits and faint associated tooling. A bit off center on both sides, but the legends are just tight to the rim in places. Said to have been struck over a Nova Constellatio copper in the 1995 Greenwald and Jackson sale, as is said by Clark to be typical. However, only a single letter seems visible from the undertype, a fairly distinctive B over the head of the effigy and the left edge of the next letter. We find no other evidence of the host.
PCGS# 687262.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier from our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Greenwald and Jackson Collections, September 1995, lot 3131; Jim LaSarre, via John Agre and Dave Wnuck (Coin Rarities Online), June 2006.
