1788 Connecticut Copper. Miller 4.1-K, W-4430. Rarity-4+. Mailed Bust Right. VF-30 (PCGS).
107.4 grains. Prominently double struck with the two impressions about seven millimeters apart, making for a visually dramatic specimen. The effigy portraits are among the strongest doubled features, along with the upper right of Liberty, including the pole arm. Light olive brown with trivial granularity and a couple of very light oxidation spots that are of little consequence. From the Norweb Collection (and including their distinctive collection envelope), a detail mystifyingly left out of the provenance in the 2010 Heritage sale. It was not in our own Norweb sale, and it seems to have been sold off by Mrs. Norweb within a decade of acquiring it, though the exact sequence is uncertain.
PCGS# 687252.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier from James Kelly's sale of February 1954, lot 64 (part); Mrs. R. Henry Norweb; Ted Craige, July 1964; Heritage's sale of the W. Philip Keller Collection, October 2010, lot 3250.
