Description

1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 42-kk.2, W-4245. Rarity-5-. Draped Bust Left, AUCTOPI. VF-35 (PCGS).
146.0 grains. A dramatic error strike acquired by Syd in our 2019 Robert Martin sale where it was described (in part, with minor edits): deep olive brown surfaces with faint microgranularity. Double struck, the second strike occupying some 75% of the planchet. The full effigy and CONNEC plus a second full CONNEC with portions of the drapery are seen on the obverse while the reverse with DE, punctuation, Liberty's head and hand, and ET from first strike visible. The DE, most of Liberty, and ET II are visible from second strike. A neat example of the popular AUCTOPI / ET IIB type.
PCGS# 687373.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier from Heritage's sale of August 1986, lot 1600; our sale Collection SLT, January 2000, lot 7398; our sale of the Robert M. Martin Collection, November 2019, lot 5280.
