A Mint State Skeleton Hand
Miller 33.36-T.2
1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 33.36-T.2, W-3900. Rarity-3. Draped Bust Left, Skeleton Hand. MS-63 BN (PCGS).
Generous mint luster is immediately noticed through the fields, accentuating soft blue toning over deep steel brown surfaces. Outlines of faded red are also seen in the leftmost obverse legend and in many of the intricacies of the reverse design. Struck a bit off center, with the obverse low, though no letters of the legend are impacted, while full dentils are visible around the upper rim. The reverse is centered high, impacting only two of the uppermost cinquefoils, but the skeleton hand is both complete and sharply delineated. Somewhat softly struck at the centers, particularly the lower reverse, and natural planchet texture is seen in these areas. In terms of surface preservation, this is one of the nicest known survivors. Even taking the unevenness into consideration, it would still place comfortably in the Condition Census. Only the Archangel Collection coin in our October 2018 sale seems nearly as nice as this among those in our online archives. This is better preserved than Syd's primary coin, but that was struck better. The same is true when comparing this to the Partrick coin.
