1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 10-E, W-2865. Rarity-5. Mailed Bust Left. VG-10 (PCGS).
185.8 grains. Medium brown with some deeper patina in the fields that nicely accentuates the designs giving them excellent visibility for the overall softness and degree of wear. Reasonably glossy even if microgranular up close. Fairly well centered with a full date. Struck from the late state of the obverse with a prominent break through the letters of AUCTORI, but on a very heavy flan. Clark notes that this variety averages in weight below the authorized 144 grains, with outliers ranging from 117 grains to 186 grains. This might well be the coin referenced at the top end and the heaviest known of the variety. The flan is clearly of substantial thickness.
PCGS# 686416.
