Description

1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 19-SS, W-6980. Rarity-5. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils. EF-40 (PCGS).
139.1 grains. Medallic alignment, as expected. This scarce variety was discovered by Eric Newman in 1957 and first published by our own Q. David Bowers in 1958. The offered example is warm autumn-brown in color, surfaces a trifle granular, but with some good gloss present. Most obverse details are bold, although the impression is off center to 3:30 with the right periphery soft and the border through the date. Reverse off center to 8 o'clock, rings at lower left flush with the border, virgin planchet roughness evident at upper right. Ranked #7 for this Newman number in the Retz census published in the 2016 revision to his Fugio Copper Notes.
PCGS# 878113. NGC ID: 2B8E.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex our (Stack's) sale of the John W. Hancock, Jr. Collection, November-December 1994, lot 95; Donald Scarinci Collection, November 2010.
