Description

1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 15-V, W-6910. Rarity-5. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils. AU Details--Cleaned (PCGS).
144.3 grains. Sharply to fully defined from a well executed strike, yet with a touch of unnatural glossiness to the texture and bright underlying rose-red color that betray a cleaning. The latter color is dominant over the upper left half of the reverse, the balance of the surfaces having retoned in steely-brown and golden-copper. Shallow planchet roughness is evident at lower right obverse and upper right reverse, other flan flaws more minor and widely scattered. There are no sizeable marks. This is the #8 coin in the 2016 Retz census ( Fugio Copper Notes ), and it presents quite nicely for the assigned grade and would serve as an adequate representative of this Newman number in many collections.
PCGS# 878105. NGC ID: 2B8E.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex our (Bowers and Merena's) James D. Brilliant and William R. Sieck Collections sale, January 1992, lot 431; Donald Scarinci Collection, November 2010.
