1787 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 20-87C, W-7950. Rarity-6. GEORGIVS III, Group III. VF-20 (PCGS).
95.7 grains. Deep copper-rose patina with an area of brighter color at lower left center on the reverse. There is evidence of an ancient cleaning here, but generally hard surfaces and bold definition to most design elements serve as positive counterweights. The planchet is flawed at right obverse and reverse borders, obliterating the detail in those areas, thin natural planchet fissure vertically behind King George's eye. A number of fine scratches over and around the bust are noted. This highly elusive variety is thought to have been struck at Machin's Mills in 1787. It is significant within this series as the only use of Vlack Obverse 20.
