Undated (ca. 1694) London Elephant Token. Hodder 2-B, W-12040. Rarity-2. GOD PRESERVE LONDON. Thick Planchet. VF-25 (PCGS).
210.0 grains. A generally olive-copper example with intermingled golden-brown that is much more prevalent on the obverse. There are a number of internal flan flaws on that side above the elephant, as well as light surface scale at the junction of its hind legs. The reverse has a smoother appearance overall, marks on both sides minor and easily overlooked during in-hand viewing. With a well centered impression and remaining detail uncommonly bold in a mid-grade survivor of this type, we suspect that this Elephant token will have no difficulty finding its way into a collection of American colonial era coinage.
PCGS# 55. NGC ID: 2U3A.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex Jim Cicik, November 28, 1993.
