Rare North Wales Halfpenny
With Lettered Edge
Circa 1795 North Wales Halfpenny. Musante GW-51, Baker-34A, W-11160. Two Stars. Copper. LANCASTER LONDON OR BRISTOL Edge. Fine-15 (PCGS).
27.2 mm. 139.6 grains. Deep steel brown, uniformly so on both sides. Scattered marks and a couple of faint old scratches will be evident upon close study, but this is actually a rather impressive example of the Lettered Edge North Wales, and one of the overall sharper ones we recall having handled. Though all of these were intentionally poorly made to look like aged, well circulated issues, this one exhibits unusual relief and detail. Slight slippage in the application of the edge device resulted in slight overlap of LANCASTER and LONDON. Interestingly, this identical situation was noted on the William Spohn Baker specimen in our November 2019 sale.
PCGS# 773. NGC ID: 2B88.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier from our (ANR's) sale of the Old Colony Collection, December 2005, lot 113.
