Description
Undated (1780) Admiral Rodney / HMS Sandwich Medal. Betts-Unlisted, BHM-237, Liechty-07. Copper. EF-40 (PCGS).
23.9 mm. 54.0 grains. Another important type featuring Rodney and the flagship he captained. The HMS Sandwich arrived in the West Indies in spring 1780, visited New York that fall, and was present at the fall of Saint Eustatius in February 1781. Granular dark olive-brown surfaces show evidence of ground exposure and some earthen encrustation on the reverse. Sharp and appealing, a tiny medalet made for a general audience to help celebrate Rodney's Caribbean victories.
