BRAZIL. 640 Reis, 1812-R. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Joao as Prince Regent. NGC AU-55.
KM-256.2; LDMB-P414; Gomes-JR26.06. Mintage: 46,537. Struck over a "J" Series 600 Reis of Jose I with previous Shield countermark on obverse; issued by decree of 18 April 1809. Highly attractive and enchanting, with very little evidence of any handling and with charming brilliance remaining among the protected areas. Some subtle toning is observed, as well as the revaluation counterstamps of the host coin. Rather RARE and seldom encountered occurrence with few examples appearing exhibiting the previous shield countermark and a such is highly interesting and desirable.
