Calico Plate Coin
PERU. Cob 8 Reales, ND (ca. 1660)-L V. Lima Mint. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, VF Details.
KM-18.2; Cal-1242 (this coin illustrated). Weight: 25.95 gms. "Star of Lima" type. Variety without date. An EXTREMELY RARE variant that shows waves below the pillars in place of the date. Some doubling is present but bold denomination and assayer remain, as well as a partial mintmark. Though the reverse lacks any identifiable legends, the central cross with castles and lions is satisfyingly complete. Slight roughness suggests saltwater immersion. However, a compelling dark mottled tone adds considerable eye appeal. A rustic and beautiful example for this issue, likely the most challenging of the various unauthorized "Star of Lima" cobs produced during this brief period.
