Description

MEXICO. War of Independence. Chihuahua. 8 Reales, 1816-Ca RP. Ferdinand VII. PCGS VF-20.
KM-111.1; Cal-1168; Ramirez-C8.6.1A (this coin illustrated). Overstruck on earlier cast 8 Reales with "M.V.A./1812" countermark (KM-202). Countermark grade: VF Details. A tantalizing Royalist issue with an interesting series of issuances. While its identifying marks were obliterated by the overstrike, the distinctive armored bust of the original cast issue is visible from beneath. Over this, the dated Monclova stamp remains quite bold. The final Chihuahua overstrike imparted a clear date, mintmark, and assayer. A unique medley of features from its three lives, this charcoal-gray 8 Reales would make a unique addition to any collection of War of Independence issues. Note: PCGS attributed the coin as having been countermarked after the 1816 overstrike, but this is incorrect. The Monclova stamp was in fact struck on the cast host, as typical, and simply survived the overstrike.
From the S.P. Rutherford Collection.

Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
