Illustrated in Mazard and T&T
FRANCE. Consulate. White Metal Obverse Cliché or Trial for 5 Francs, ND (1802/3). Paris Mint. Napoléon as First Consul. PCGS MS-60.
Maz-576 (R4; this piece illustrated); T&T-1052.3 (this piece illustrated). By F. Vasselon or N. Heurthaux. Weight: 6.35 gms. An EXTREMELY RARE portrait trial that serves as the plate piece for two different references, this example was attributed to George in Mazard, with the authors of T&T suggesting Vasselon on account of the similarities in portrait once the laurel wreath is added. Meanwhile, Margolis suggests an attribution to Heurthaux instead, in that "...its resemblance to the obverse of Heurthaux's finished essay (compare Guilloteau-1223) is unmistakable. " Nevertheless, it RARITY and importance are quite clear, all while presenting deep gray surfaces and a rather irregular planchet.
From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Münzen und Medaillen on 27 November 1962). Ex: Collection R.K. (Raoul Kraft) (Münzen und Medaillen - 11/1962) Lot # 410.
