Description

FRANCE. Consulate. Silver 5 Décimes Module Essai (Pattern), Year 8-A (1799/1800). Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63.
cf. Maz-584a/585a (for obv./rev.). Fluted edge. Allegedly By P.-J. Lorthior. Weight: 3.96 gms. A VERY RARE variant in which the bust of Pallas-Athena is facing left rather than the expected right for this reverse, the present specimen glistens with a great deal of brilliance and some enchanting toning nearer the peripheries. About this peculiar example, Margolis cites C. Charlet, in 'Un curieux < > attribué à Lorthior' ( Bulletin de la Société française de numismatique, février 1991), in that "...the reverse design is masonic in its symbolism, basing this on a masonic jeton of similar basic type listed by Feuardent (no.5488-5489). Charlet also believes that the helmeted bust of Pallas on the obverse has masonic significance, and surmises that this piece may have served as a masonic jeton de présence between 1801 and 1806, although he does not provide any documentary proof of this. "
From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Hans Schulman on 5 November 1952 for $1.50).

Estimate: $500.00- $1000.00
