FRANCE. Constitution. Billon 18 Deniers Token "Mint Sport" of Two Obverse Dies, Year 4 (1792). Paris Mint. PCGS MS-62.
cf. Maz-118 & 120 (for each obv.). Plain edge. Weight: 2.97 gms. A rather unusual and no doubt EXTREMELY RARE curiosity, this specimen may well be the product of leisure time at the mint, given the strange muling. About the piece, Margolis writes that "...the great rarity of this piece, which weighs 2.97g, and the weight given by Delombardy in 1848 for the example in the Rignault collection, 2.975g, indicates to me that they are probably the same example. The results of an XRFS analysis performed by Monnaies Numismatic Consultants on July 23, 1993 were...Weight: 2.9757 grammes; Specific gravity: 9.55; Fineness: Silver approx. 400 parts per 1000 alloyed with copper and containing lead as an impurity and a trace of gold; Diameter: 22.22/22.00 mm.(E-W/N-S); Edge: Plain; Struck: ↑↑; off centre. Remarks: Graham Dyer says 'Doubt use of a collar. Letters have skidded and beading not well-defined.' "
From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Hans Schulman on 24 October 1952). Ex: Howard D. Gibbs Collection.
