FRANCE. Constitution. Bell Metal Medallic Trial, 1791. Lyon Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63.
Maz-207 (R3); Rondot-4. Plain edge. Weight: 20.88 gms. Referred to in the noted of Margolis as an " essai aux deux ecussons ovales," this type struck in bell metal doesn't actually feature a denomination, or even allude to a proposed monetary type. It would seem to merely serve as a basis for the use of bell metal in subsidiary coinage. Given how examples struck in this metal have faired, the present specimen offers enchanting eye appeal, with an olive-brown hue and great brilliance remaining. Undoubtedly a VERY RARE opportunity, and an example that is likely near or at the apex of the finest known.
From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Fritz Weber at AMFICC in New York City on 11 April 1975). Ex: Shepard Pond Collection (New Netherlands (12/1974) Lot # 406.
