1791 Washington Large Eagle Cent. Musante GW-15, Baker-15, W-10610. Lettered Edge. MS-64 BN (PCGS). CAC.
Direct lighting calls forth enticing prooflike reflectivity from the fields of this otherwise frosty near-Gem. Soft powder blue and pinkish-rose undertones backlight dominant copper-brown patina, the surfaces pleasingly smooth overall with just a few stray marks precluding an even higher numeric grade. A trivial planchet flaw at the obverse border before the tip of Washington's bust is mentioned solely as an identifier. This popular Washington type was produced in England as part of a bid to secure a coinage contract from the United States Congress. While many examples that were shipped to America eventually found their way into circulation, many high grade examples such as this were preserved by collectors and others in England.
PCGS# 702. NGC ID: 2B6Z.
