1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 12-M, W-6350. Rarity-4-. Stout Indian, Period After MASSACHUSETTS. AU-58 (PCGS).
144.9 grains. Certainly one of the finest known of this Ryder number. Beautiful medium copper-brown with some darker woodgraining. Smooth and pleasing despite some linear horizontal striations, most notably on the obverse at the Naive American's head and ankles. The left periphery of the reverse is a bit rough where striking force was not sufficient to obliterate the planchet's texture. Centers are sharp, exceptional detail throughout. The reverse retains rich luster, obverse luster more subtle. A coin of great beauty and importance for both type collectors and specialists in the Massachusetts copper series. While it was the third finest in the Ryder-Boyd-Ford collection, its ordinal rank among all known specimens may be identical and is certainly similar.
PCGS# 948. NGC ID: 2B27.
