ITALY. Papal (States of the Church). Ducat, ND (1350-1439). Rome Mint. Roman Senate. PCGS MS-63.
Fr-2; MIR-178; Berman-152. Weight: 3.51 gms. Imitating Venice. Obverse: St. Mark kneeling left, presenting cruciform staff to St. Peter standing right; Reverse: Christ the Redeemer standing facing within mandorla. At first seeming to be a Venetian issue, this type was issued under the authority of the Roman Senate while the papacy had been moved from Rome to Avignon in France. As such, a popular regional trade issue was used as the prototype. Highly crisp and enchanting, with great brilliance throughout.
