CANADA. Hudson Bay Company. Uniface Copper Beaver Plate or Token, ND (ca. Mid-Late 19th Century). EXTREMELY FINE.
Gingras-225 (R7). Dimensions: 49mm x 26mm; Weight: 5.26 gms. Obverse: 1 HT / HBC stamped somewhat crudely in two lines; edges clipped in a diagonal pattern to form a lengthwise octagonal shape; Reverse: Incuse impression of obverse stamps. EXTREMELY RARE and interesting, these types are sometimes erroneously designated as a bale marks, though Gingras writes that "Oldtimers of the Company are quite certain metallic labels were never attached to bales of furs and the lack of a hole in them would bear this out." He also states that there are no more than 8 known to exist, all of which have been found in British Columbia.
