COLOMBIA. 1/4 Real, 1816-PN. Popayan Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC MS-64.
EMO-2353.1 (Plate coin); KM-67.2; Cal-283; Restrepo-101.1B. Variety with wide reeded border. A stunningly bright and fresh near-Gem. Struck on a full planchet with a remarkably frosty finish that attests to the coin's uncirculated nature. Bested only by a single example graded MS-65. This interesting one-year issue uses the traditional Spanish colonial types, yet appears to have been struck by Colombian patriots after 1820, following the decisive defeat of the Spanish royalists at the Battle of Boyacá in 1819. This is hinted at by the visible "1/2" overdate seen on some examples.
