Rare and Enchanting Colombian Issue in Choice Mint State
COLOMBIA. Nueva Granada. 1/4 Real, 1821. Bogota Mint. NGC MS-63.
EMO-2305.1 (Plate coin); KM-79.1; Restrepo-145.2. Variety without mintmark. A RARE variety in any state, this piece is an especially unique offering as it is far and away the finest certified (the runner-up being a mere EF-40). This well-struck exemplar features razor-sharp clarity across all design elements. A silky cabinet tone adorns both sides but still permits a strong lustrous sheen to permeate. A terrific opportunity for advanced collectors of the Colombian series. While struck for the nascent state referred to as "Gran Colombia", this Cuartillo reuses the design originally issued in 1814-1816 by the United Provinces of Nueva Granada, Colombia's poorly conceived first experiment with independence. After a brief reconquest by the Spanish, "Gran Colombia" retook its autonomy in 1819 and resumed striking coinage shortly thereafter. While later issues of 1821 add a mintmark and move the denomination to the right of the cap, this variant is distinguishable from the earlier type only by its date.
