CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1818/6-So. Santiago Mint. NGC EF-45.
EMO-2204.1 (Plate coin); KM-73; Cal-311. Despite the presence of a few marks, this overdated example displays a deep charcoal tone surrounding the central devices, creating an enticing rustic look. This piece, along with the subsequent lots dated 1817 or 1818, were initially struck by the young Republic using modified colonial dies. This is clearly shown in the somewhat crude overdate, as the timespan of 1816-1818 marks the pivotal turn of the tide against Spanish control. As such, though they bear the recognizable types and images of the Spanish Empire, these are actually the first Cuartillos struck by independent Chile.
