Description

GREAT BRITAIN. Cambridge University. William Browne Prize for Classical Odes and Epigrams Gold Medal, 1904. UNCIRCULATED.
Eimer-711. 36.55 mm, 24.06 gms. By Lewis Pingo. Obverse: Bust of William Browne left, ESSE ET VILDERI / D. GVLIELMVS BROWNE. EQVES/ NAT III NON. IAN. A. I. MDCXCII; Reverse: Apollo seated left with arm extended holding wreath, kneeling figure right, SVNT SVA PRAEMIA LAVDI/ ELECTVS COLL MED/ LONG PRAESES A S/ MDCCLXV; Edge: JOHN FRASER 1904. This charming example exhibits boldly struck intricate devices with a frosty texture in contrast the flashy fields. Close inspection reveals wispy hairlines and minor abrasions mentioned for accuracy. In 1765 Sir William Browne was elected to the position of president of the Royal College of Physicians. The awardee of this medal, John Fraser (1882-1945), was Jesus Professor of Celtic at Oxford in 1921. He won this medal while he was a student at Trinity College, Cambridge.
