Very Rare Aureus from Caracalla's Final Year
CARACALLA, A.D. 198-217. AV Aureus (6.39 gms), Rome Mint, A.D. 217. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5. Light Marks.
RIC-285B; Cal-2755. Obverse: Laureate and cuirassed bust right; Reverse: Jupiter standing left, holding thunderbolt and scepter. Rather well centered and struck, this RARE type exhibits very little in handling, and emanates from the final year in the life of Caracalla. The portrait style is also different from those issued earlier in his reign, with the overall shoulder design, closely cropped beard, and furrowed brow very reminiscent to the portrait style that would soon follow under Macrinus.
