MEXICO. Banco de Mexico. 50 Pesos, 21.4.1937. P-37a. M4627a. PMG Very Fine 25.
In 1936 the Banco de Mexico decided to reduce the size of its banknotes printed by the American Bank Note Company in order to reduce expenses. The 50 Pesos saw an entire new design, with the portrait of General Ignacio Zaragoza on the front and a view of the Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl volcanoes on back. Printed with two different dates (1937 and 1940) in 1941 a new design was introduced, most likely in an effort by the bank to standardize the appearance of its banknotes. As a result the 50 Pesos of this type was short-lived, and issued examples of either date are downright rare. This is a nicely circulated example of the first date with some mounting remnants on the back which are not distracting. PMG comments "Previously Mounted."
