AUSTRALIA. Bank of New Zealand. 5 Pounds, ND (18xx). P-Unlisted. Specimen. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
Private bank issue for the Sydney office of the Bank of New Zealand. Perforated specimen printed by BWC, ornate border design with blue and yellow underprint, Maori and landscape vignettes at left on the obverse, intricate design on the reverse with denomination at center, and flanked by counters at opposing ends. The Bank of New Zealand was founded in Auckland in 1861. In 1872, it opened a branch office in Melbourne, which was the bank's first branch office in Australia. The Sydney branch, for which this specimen was printed, opened for business in 1875. This type, which shares the design with its counterpart issued in New Zealand but was printed in different colors was the third banknote issue for the bank (and the second for Australia) and consisted of six denominations. Michael P. Vort-Ronald states that just a single issued example of this type is known from the Australian branches, making specimens such as this the only way most collectors can reasonably hope to acquire this rare type. Please note PMG has misattributed this as "New Zealand". The note should be classified under Australia, as that is where it was to be issued.
