LOT WITHDRAWN - SPAIN. Philip II/Peace of Cambrai Silver Medal, 1559. PCGS SPECIMEN-61.
Betts-3; van Loon-I, 27. By G. Poggini. Diameter: 39.4mm. Obverse: Bareheaded and armored bust left, wearing ruffled collar; Reverse: Female personification of Peace standing right, setting ablaze implements of war; in background to right, perspective view of the Temple of Janus, with doors closed. Deeply toned and highly attractive, this specimen presents a great late renaissance portrait as well as a nod to classical motifs via the reference to the Temple of Janus. A Roman edifice, its depiction with closed doors signified a time of peace, as opposed to open doors, which signified a time of war. VERY RARE and important, with just some light marks behind the bust and at the edges noted for completeness. In addition to its impressive pedigree, this specimen is also the plate medal for the type in Christopher McDowell's update to Betts ( The Early Betts Medal Companion ) as 3A, with its appearance in the Ford sale cited as well.
