This type is one of a series struck during the exciting days of 1848-49, when liberals gathered at Frankfurt to establish a German empire with a constitution and a parliament. The effort collapsed when Frederick William of Prussia refused the crown and unification had to wait until 1871, when Bismarck successfully prosecuted the Franco-Prussian War.
