Lot of (2) Helena, Montana Territory. County of Lewis & Clarke. 1884-87 Various Amounts. PMG Extremely Fine 40 to 40 EPQ. Territorial Warrants.
A pair of Territorial Warrants from the Territory of Montana. Although unremarkable at first glance and indistinguishable from the pile of common ephemera that is commonly found on the likes of eBay or encountered in bulk accumulations, the warrant dated 1887 is a fascinating piece of ephemera on account of the unusual subject matter. Paid to one Henry Lane, Lane was paid $5.25 for killing a total of 105 squirrels at 5 cents per head. A pair of stamps from the Merchants' National Bank of Helena and the Bozeman National Bank can be found on the back. The $5.25 entitled to Mr. Lane was paid out by the Merchants' National Bank of Helena (Charter# 2732). PMG comments "Stamp Cancelled, Corner Tip Missing) on grade 40 note.
