The private notes that were issued in 1893 and the following years were universally accepted and circulated extensively. As a result, all are rare, and most varieties are seldom seen, especially the higher denominations. This 1 Gulden note is from S.E.L. Maduro & Sons, a trading firm on the island, which was founded in 1837 and still exists. We have only seen a few examples of this denomination for any of the private issues from Curacao.
