1923 Calvin Coolidge First Term Presidential Medal. By George T. Morgan. Bronze. Gem Mint State.
64.4 mm. Obv: Youthful bust right, name CALVIN COOLIDGE around. Rev: Standing Liberty holds tablet inscribed CONSTITVTION / LAW-ORDER, flanked by two boys in Renaissance court costume, date AVG. 3 - 1923 above, peripheral inscription INAVGVRATED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Here is an example of a virtually unknown medal area: "List" medals of the U.S. Mint that are wholly different from Presidential medals offered in recent years. The current Coolidge medal by J.R. Sinnock is totally different with a pinch-featured portrait and stylized seated Liberty. The medal offered here was struck immediately after Warren G. Harding's sudden death and the reverse recalls Coolidge's role in breaking the Boston police strike as governor of Massachusetts, calling out the National Guard with the statement, "There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, anytime." There are similarly little-known and scarce List medals for Presidents Harding, Roosevelt and Truman.
